Sustainability, Quality Assurance & Certifications

We’re committed to offering sustainably sourced seafood to our clients. Our Sustainability Manager, Andre Brugger has worked in sustainable seafood for over 20 years managing both local and international projects aiming to achieve the best standards for sustainable harvesting and farming. For wild caught seafood, Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Friend of the Sea. For sustainable farm raised, Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) and Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP). For Food Safety we procure product with GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) certification, BRC (British Retail Consortium) or IFS.

Nearly ¾ of the species we carry are certified sustainable or part of a Fishery Improvement Project (FIP). We are currently involved in 7 different FIPs globally. Four we helped to launch, the Brazilian Caribbean Red Snapper, the Venezuelan Lobster, the Mexican Octopus and the Indian Grouper. Our ultimate goal is to have 90% of our seafood coming from a sustainable certified source or in a FIP by 2025.

There are many different requirements and control methods in the production process. At processing plant facilities we pay special attention to room temperatures, water/ice and chlorine levels. At farms, we monitor solved oxygen, nitrites, ammonia, phosphorous and other water quality indicators.

The great majority of seafood sourced by NETUNO USA is from open-based stocks in developing countries. Sustainable management and conservation must be done over the stock and the habitats to assure supply for future generations. To avoid overfishing NETUNO USA encourages fishermen, NGOs, local governments, and other fishery stakeholders to pursue MSC Sustainable Fishery Certification/label or to start FIPs (Fishery Improvement Projects). Beyond the 3rd party audits and certifications, NETUNO USA also supports sustainable initiatives. In packaging, for example, through the use of a blend with regular and biodegradable plastic. For carbon footprint sink, we support seaweed farming in clam leased areas in Tampa Bay – FL to name a few.
